// Sonic confidence...
What is mastering?
Are you confident your music will sound as good as possible, wherever it's played? Mastering is the critical final step in the creation of your record.
The mastering engineer's primary goal is to make your tracks sound as good as possible, and to make sure they translate well across different playback formats, systems and devices, including radio. As a fresh pair of ears they will also be able to spot any blemishes or deficiencies in the mix before you commit your tracks for release.
Importantly this is a real person with real skill and experience making suggestions and enhancements to your music. Despite online, automated mastering services being cheaper they are not as good and will kill your mix!
The Process
Mastering is often seen as a dark art but it really isn't. Its largely common sense, awesome tools and great ears.
Every engineer will have their own way of working, unique sound and experience, but the basic process looks something like this:
Analysis and repair
The engineer will listen to a first pass of the complete work, dealing with any clicks, pops or hums in the mix as well as advising where any tweaks should be made to the mix before the real fun begins.
Processing
Using high quality audio processing tools for equalisation, compression and limiting, the engineer will work on bringing the best out of the mixes, often adding warmth, depth and punch.
They will also ensure that the tracks are sonically consistent and sit well together as a complete work. The engineer may also employ stereo enhancements to give the mixes width whilst ensuring the original intention or style of a sound isn't lost.
Compilation
Finally the tracks are placed in order, spaced and levelled to ensure the complete record sounds balanced from start to finish and that nothing sticks out.
Your final master should be slick, polished and sound awesome wherever it's played.
Pricing
Single track mastering starts at £30 per audio file. This includes one round of revisions for complete peace of mind and delivery in required formats.

About
James has over 20 years' experience as a professional engineer. Starting out at the back end of the '90s engineering at Orinoco Studios (Chemical Brothers, Beth Orton, Oasis, Alabama 3) he went on to run studios around London, mixing and mastering albums for a wide range of clients and carving out a modest career as a writer and producer. Nowadays he likes a quieter life and brings his broad experience to mastering, specialising in Jazz, Americana and music for film and TV, for no better reason than that's the music he likes!
